Anti-Wrinkle Injections: What You Should Know Before Starting

Friends and family often ask me about anti-wrinkle injections, and what the main considerations are. If you’ve been curious, here’s a brief summary of what I think is helpful to know before starting.

What they do

Anti-wrinkle injections relax certain facial muscles to soften lines and wrinkles caused by movement (like frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines).

They are not used to treat skin texture, pigmentation, or deep folds.

When they work best

Anti-wrinkle injections are best for dynamic wrinkles (lines that appear with facial expressions). They can also help prevent lines from becoming deeper over time.

How it works

Treatment is quick. Injections with a very small needle go into targeted muscles. Depending on the type of anti-wrinkle injection, you’ll start noticing results in 3–7 days, with the full effect at about 2 weeks. The results are temporary and usually last 3–4 months.

What to expect

Subtle improvement and a natural enhancement is usually the goal, and treatments can be repeated regularly to maintain results.

Possible side effects

Most are minor, including redness, swelling, or bruising where the needle went in. Other possible side effects include headache or tightness in the treated area (usually mild and short-lived). Rarely, eyelids or brows may droop if the product spreads, which will wear off with time. To minimise the risk of side effects, it is important to have your treatment performed by an experienced injector, and it is important to follow pre and post procedure advice.

Pre-treatment advice

Getting ready properly for your anti-wrinkle injections can minimise side effects—such as bruising—and help you achieve the best results. Always let your injector know about any medical conditions, medications, or previous reactions, as treatment may not be suitable for some people depending on their health or medications. Alcohol should be avoided for at least 24 hours before your appointment. Skip facials, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion beforehand, as these can irritate the skin. Anti-wrinkle injections should not be performed during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Aftercare

Stay upright for four hours, don’t rub the area, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and facials for 24 hours.

Expectations

Subtle, natural improvement is the goal. To maintain results, repeat treatments are needed over time. Occasionally, a small “top-up” may be required at around 2 weeks if the effect is uneven or less than expected.
