Most Frequently Asked Questions about Recovery from Blepharoplasty Surgery: Dos and Don’ts
This information will help you care for yourself at home after your blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
Immediately After Surgery
It might be helpful to wear sunglasses on your way home, as your eyes may be sensitive to light.
The antibiotic ointment applied during surgery may cause temporary blurry vision, which typically clears within 24 hours.
Application of antibiotic ointment should continue for one week after surgery.
Rest and sleep with your head raised on pillows to help prevent swelling at your surgical sites.
Bruising & Swelling
It is normal for your eyes to look swollen and bruised after your surgery. The eyelid swelling may be worse in the morning and may improve during the day.
It may also be normal to experience swelling and bruising on your cheeks and jawline as well. This will typically get better 2-3 weeks after surgery.
Contact Lenses vs Glasses
Avoid wearing contact lenses for at least 2 weeks after surgery. You may wear glasses instead.
Exercise
Avoid activities such as heavy lifting and exercise.
Avoid bending at the waist or lifting heavy items (more than 2 kilograms) for 4-6 weeks after surgery.
Driving
Do not drive until you have stopped taking pain medication and your vision is clear. Most patients can safely drive again about 5–10 days after surgery, once they feel comfortable.
Cold compresses & eye drops
Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and bruising from blepharoplasty surgery.
It is also recommended to apply regular eye drops to your eyes. Remember not to pull on your eyelids while applying the eye drops.
Showering
You can take showers from the neck down any time after your surgery. Don’t take full showers until your surgeon tells you it’s safe to do so.
Make-up
Don’t apply creams or eye makeup to your surgical sites for 2 weeks after your surgery. You can use creams and makeup on the rest of your face.
