Are you considering breast reduction surgery after Ozempic & Mounjaro?

Dr Jen Law Plastic Surgeon Breast Reduction Sydney North Shore Eastern Sydney

If you’re considering breast reduction surgery after using Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic, or other weight loss medications, the main factors to focus on are timing, maintaining a stable weight, and ensuring safety during anaesthesia.

Reach your goal weight first before surgery

Ideally, surgeons often prefer your weight to be stable for at least 6 months before breast reduction surgery. Weight-loss medications can cause rapid fat loss in the breasts. If you operate too soon, you may lose more breast volume after surgery and the results of your surgery can look deflated or uneven later. Therefore obtaining a stable weight before undergoing breast reduction surgery helps maintain longevity of your results.

Anaesthesia safety

Most surgeons and anaesthetists recommend pausing medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro prior to surgery.

Why this matters:

  • These medications slow stomach emptying

  • This increases the risk of aspiration during anaesthesia

  • A “full stomach” under anaesthesia can be dangerous

Most recommend pausing weight-loss injections several weeks before surgery. This gives your stomach time to return to more normal function, helping lower the risk of aspiration during anaesthesia and improving overall safety. If you’re planning breast reduction surgery with Dr Law in Sydney, her anaesthetist can provide specific guidance on when to stop medications such as Mounjaro or Ozempic before your procedure.

Nutrition is important

Weight-loss medications can reduce appetite significantly.

Before surgery, it’s important to:

  • Maintain adequate protein intake

  • Avoid nutritional deficiencies

  • A balanced diet helps support proper wound healing

Poor nutrition can increase the risk of:

  • Delayed healing

  • Infection

  • Less optimal scarring

If you’re losing weight using medications, the ideal sequence should be:

1. You have been prescribed Mounjaro/Ozempic by your doctor → reach goal weight

2. Maintain stable weight for at least 6 months

3. Stop medication 1–2 weeks before surgery

4. Have breast reduction

5. Restart medication only when cleared
